Ladies of bevello: Meet Jaci!

It’s that time again…meet another member of the Winston-Salem team: Jaci (pronounced like “Jackie”). Jaci comes to bevello from the booming metropolis that is Clemmons, North Carolina, and most recently from the journalism school at Elon University. She’s a sweet girl, but don’t let her see you slouching!

What drew you to bevello (why did you want to work for us)?

I loved the small company mentality and that I would be able to be involved in all aspects of the business (social media, planning events, etc.), not just standing behind a counter selling clothes. The fact that I love the merchandise that I’m surrounded by everyday didn’t hurt either!

Other than work/shop/play at bevello, what else do you do?

I’m a huge bookworm… I’ll read anything from Shakespeare to online blogs to the back of the cereal box. Right now I’m interning at John F. Blair Publisher, a small independent book publishing company here in Winston, where I get to read manuscripts all day and then send out rejection letters. I also love writing (I’ve kept a journal since I was 6 years old), making lists (mainly just crossing things off them), and pretending I’m a contestant on So You Think You Can Dance in my bedroom.

Describe your personal style.

For me, clothes are all about comfort. I’m obsessed with anything silk, cashmere,  or soft cotton. I like slouchy sweaters and flowy tunics with skinny jeans during the day. When it comes to shoes, though, I adhere to the saying “beauty is pain”… my feet are going to hate me in a few years, but right now it’s worth it to be able to squeeze my poor feet into those blister-inducing 4 inch heels.

What is your favorite trend right now? What do you see being big for spring?

Right now, as North Carolina temperatures dip to their lowest levels of the winter, I don’t think I could live without a few cute, colorful scarves. They never go out of style and dress up even the plainest basics and coats. As for spring styles, I think metallics and sequin-covered accessories will continue to be big (what girl doesn’t love to sparkle?), as well as voluminous skirts paired with body-hugging tops (leotards, anyone?).

What do you think is the worst fashion mistake a girl could make?

Having bad posture (yes, I’m going to sound like your mother for a second… deal with it). I know it’s not exactly a ‘fashion’ mistake in the what-not-to-wear sense, but have you ever seen a slouchy, slump-shouldered girl whose clothes actually appear to fit her well? Nope. By pulling back your shoulders and standing up tall, all your clothes will fall better on your body and you’ll look so much more confident.

Jaci would totally wear this discrete outfit if it weren't for the posture...

What is the fashion staple every girl should have in her closet?

A thin, cotton layering tee… it can go under everything from jackets to sweaters, is appropriate for all ages and is never outdated.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

I’ve always wanted to have a column where I could write about whatever popped into my head that day with minimal editorial input (now that I think about it, I think nowadays that job title is ‘blogger’). I basically want to be Kate Hudson’s character in How To Lose A Guy In Ten Days, minus the crazy fake girlfriend behavior. But if, for some crazy-strange reason, that doesn’t work out, I’d love to write for a fashion/travel/lifestyle magazine.

Who is your celebrity fashion icon? Why?

Definitely Rachel Bilson. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her in a bad outfit. She somehow wears really basic, simple pieces and makes it look like the first time anyone’s ever paired them together. Effortlessly genius.  Plus, she’s got a bag collection that is to die for.

What is your favorite item in-store right now and why?

C. Luce’s black faux-leather jacket… it’s really edgy (which isn’t my usual style in the least bit) and has just the right amount of embellishment so that you don’t look like a tattooed motorcycle babe. Now I just gotta work up the courage to wear it with some attitude!

Q: What drew you to bevello? (why did you want to work for us)

A: My brother actually is the one that found out about Bevello this past summer. We did some research and I decided I would go for it! I have always preferred to work in a boutique over a department store- so this was my shot. I am glad to get some retail experience and all the knowledge I can gain before I graduate in May.

Q: Other than bevello what else do you do?

A: I am very dedicated to my schoolwork and active on campus with sports and clubs. I love going shopping..of course, I try to spend as much time as I can with my family, friends, and boyfriend.

Q: Describe your personal style?

I dress trendy but casual- don’t like to go overboard. I would prefer to wear jeans with a cute top any day. I will shop at any store that I can find cute styles! Clearance & Sale are my friends. What I see in my closet is a lot of black & bright colors; I really seem to gravitate to black.

Q: What is your favorite in house(bevello) designer?

A: I really do like Trinity and Esley because they are simple but elegant & they fit my style.

Q: What do you think the worst fashion mistake a girl could make is?

A: Not dressing appropriately for each situation- don’t come looking trashy to an interview. Not looking confident in what she is wearing! Don’t always be a follower- express your own personality!

What not to wear to an interview....or anywhere...really!

Q:What is a fashion staple you believe every girl should have in her closet?

A: I definitely think every girl should have a cami- I wear mine pretty much under all my shirts. Also, a simple but elegant black cocktail length dress.

Q: What do you want to be when you grow up?

A:    Ha that is a funny question! Kind of scary for me to even begin to think  about-I have all my life to figure that out.  I hope to have my own boutique one day. In the mean time I want to be a visual merchandiser, buyer, work w/ a designer…I know I have big dreams.

Q: Who is your celebrity fashion icon? Why?

A:   I do not have just one, but if I had to pick I would say Reese Witherpsoon because I have had a lot of people tell me I look like her and she is always dressed so cute !

THIS JUST IN: Scarves are no longer used solely to keep one’s neck warm during the wintry months. No, no longer shall we pack away our beloved wraps to store away until the dead of winter, leaving  our necks naked throughout the remaining 3 seasons.

It’s no retail mistake that you see isles of checkered, floral, striped and otherwise-printed scarves in your favorite shopping locales. Scarves, wraps and ties are, quite possibly, the trademark accessory of 2009. And bevello, your favorite online clothing boutique, is on it.

This peach-colored ruffle scarf, designed by Sun Palace, is lightweight and airy — so you won’t be drug down by the summer heat. The peach will go with many of the other big colors of the season: rust, brown, white and, as always, black. Throw it on a top, dress or jacket and you’re instantly in vogue!

You can’t deny the return of the check this season. This heather-gray gingham scarf, also by Sun Palace, is cut from a gauzey fabric to keep you cool. Plus, the light-buffalo check will make any ensemble snazzy-chic.

Sun Palace did it right again with this ivory-cream lace scarf. The scarf is soft to the touch and has a vintage lace. Add a retro feel to any look!

Don’t be afriad to scarf it up.  I was before I knew how to wear them. You feelin’ the same? No worries! How to Tie a Scarf 101.

You can thank me later. ;-)

WWD: What’s the New Lipstick?

This year was the first time that I had heard of the lipstick effect.  Basically when the economy is down, lipstick sales soar.  Why you ask? Well, lipstick is the one purchase that is fairly cheap (depending on what cosmetic line you use) and can make a women feel good about herself!  I’m not sure if a lip gloss or lipstick would really quench my thirst, but here’s what WWD has to say about it:

” The phenomenon, known as the lipstick effect, dates back to The Great Depression and has provided bright spots in otherwise dull retail landscapes.  Meanwhile, Estee Lauder chairman Leonard Lauder added credence to the economic indictor when he coined the “Lipstick Index” post 9/11.  The sqaure root of the concept is an easy, feel-good item that offers a quick and affordable fix.”

According to WWD one of the most popular  lipsticks is the new Guerlain Rouge G, the red lipstick

Hmm, pretty packaging at least.  So other than lipstick what else are women turning to in these economic times of despair?   According to Ken Downing, senior vice president and fashion director at Neiman Marcus ” The new lipstick is shoes”

Brands that are trending up are Tory Burch, Christian Louboutin, Manolo Blahnik and Christian Dior.  Looks like Carrie Bradshaw had it right all along!

Looks like accessories are a big hit amongst this recession.  Here’s what Scott Schramm Senior VP of Henri Bendel has to say about the strength of accessories: “Accessories typically have been recession-proof. ”

(“Beyond ‘Lipstick Index’: Stores see some hits even in the recession” by Jessica Iredale)

I agree.  Accessories are key in fashion.  It takes a blah and boring dress or shirt and adds that much needed POP!  Its an acquired skill. One that I myself need to work on.  I am so focused on my outfit and shoes that I regularly forget to put on accessories!

The reason I love accessories?

It doesn’t matter what size you are!  Accessories look great on everyone size 2 to 22!

Whats my favorite “lipstick” ?     The hinged wallet or clutch!
