Singing in the Rain….

I  remember the days of my childhood when I would actually play in the rain.  Careless and fancy-free ; I would get dressed in my crappy clothes. Put on my Dad’s oversized raincoat, grab an umbrella and splash and stomp in the puddles around my driveway.

Flash-Forward 20 years: Instead of embracing the rain, We, as adults run and shutter from every drop. I am constantly finding myself ill-equip for the rain.  My gap poncho from high school is always conveniently stashed away in my trunk. Umbrellas? Sure !    I ‘ve got two of em!  One on my porch so I can grab it on the way to my car (never-do), the other is an Ark & Co one (Great new designer who we brought on) that I got free at the MAGIC show.  Where’s that one? In my car? Nope….

In place of a wine bottle in my wine rack….

So as you can see my rain preparedness… not so good.  On days like this I also have trouble figuring out what to wear. I want to look cute, but it’s so hard when it really limits your shoe selection.

My solution:  THE RAIN-BOOT!

I can dress in relation to my new water shoe and tuck my jeans in them so I avoid that awful wet ankle syndrome.  So I’ve done my research and Target definitely has the cutest selection.  I don’t want to spend more than $25.00 on something I will only wear once and while.

Here are my top choices( I also included an outfit sample with each boot)

So go ahead and cast your vote for which boot I should buy! I need your opinions!  Just comment on this post and let me know.     Soon, I will be back in action stomping in those puddles faster than you can say “Hair-Sprayed Bangs from 1987″

Beware of the cheap Maxi-dress!

!!WARNING WARNING WARNING!!!:

This is a severe bump, bulge and any other unsightly body part warning for all you ladies out there who are not a size 4 or below….

BEWARE OF THE CHEAP MAXI DRESS:

Don’t do it ladies….. sure they look soooo tempting with their low price tag of $20 or $25.  but once you get them on, its not a pretty sight. Get your spanks and all other fat and roll hiding undergarments ready, these cheapos are about as forgiving as the white leotard we wore in our early ballerina days before before body image mattered.

Here’s a cheap maxi dress that I am regretting in my closet.  I know I know…. I shoulda tried it on and actually took into account more than the cheap price tag…but alas I was gotten…ughhh

Forever 21 Racerback dress

Forever 21 Racerback dress

Check out how this girl’s knee even sticks out.  The photographers cleverly positioned the dress to look as it falls like that…. WRONG, once you get this body hugger on.. out comes all your curves and bumps and bulges, and not in a good way.

After self inflicting these fashion wounds to myself mutiple times this summer, I ve decided to save other girls out there from making this monstrous mistake… Check out some tips for maxi-mizing your maxi selection.

1)  Check out the material- What’s it made of? Sure cotton jersey material is good and all, but make sure the concentration is a thick and bouncy material thats going to flow nicey over the body, not stick to it. Most of the cheapy’s are made of polyester.

Brown Maxi dress made of Modal

Brown Maxi dress made of Modal

“Modal” which is a rayon and cotton combination. Modal is a thick and bouncy material that falls beautifully on the female figure and doesn’t lay inappropriately on the wrong areas. These maxi dresses are by Frenzi, a fabulous designer named Jully Kang is to thank for these.

2) Avoid the Solids-  I immediately was drawn to the solids of this summer must have. However the prints really take the focus off your body and give the dress all the attention.

3) If you have a larger chest avoid the smocking tube top: This can tend to make your chest look even larger and sometimes it looks like one big boob =p

Lavender Purple Shoulder Strap Maxi Dress

Bevello provides a fun option if you have a larger bust and don’t want to miss out on the strapless version. This one shoulder dress shows the sexy shoulders while offering an adequate amount of coverage. I love this maxi because I haven’t seen another style of unique maxi out there like this!

4)  Check for extra details:  A ruffle at the bottom and an empire waist at the top with pleating. These lead to a more diverse fit. The maxi dress tends to be a straight up and down style with no other cuts or silhouette.  Ruffles and pleating help the silhouette lay creatively and flatter the body!

This old navy find has a ruffled and tiered ruffle bottom that flares away from the body

5. When all goes wrong… go chiffon:  Yup, i’ll admit it, baby got back…and boobs and gut and extra flab where it shows most. But hey I can still sport this style with the rest of those tiny girls out there.  What I’ve found works best for a curvier body type is chiffon maxis, these are so flowy and fun. I feel like a princess and it slenderizes me instantly.

HOW:   I would wear the trinity yellow ribbon dress with the old navy rope sandels.  The “works in progress” necklace goes great with the colors of the dress and the Anthropologie “Zowie Zinnia” hand bag.  The yellow and green combination is so fresh and summery!

WHERE:  I would throw on this cute little ensemble to a day trip to the beach with my girlfriends.  The dress is casual enough as a perfect bathing suit cover-up, but still pulls off a well put together outfit!  The handbag could hold all my beach day needs from sunglasses to sunscreen!  Throw me a beach towel and lets hit the road!

Help me pick my One piece for this summer!

The evolution of the one piece bathing suit:

ughh yeah summers here. fabulous.  I mean… FABULOUS!  well i can’t exactly hide my reluctancy to throw myself in a bath suit once again.  Yeah I got curves. You know… a little more than I should. But So do a lot of other girls!

So this year instead of the bikini, I am gonna try out the hot new style in swimwear, THE ONE PIECE.

I literally have not worn one of these since my speedo days.  When I was growing up you didn’t wear a bikini until you were at least in high school.  So we opted for options like these.

12338-2t

Yeah I dunno. Maybe its cause I was in a catholic school.  Even the cool girls wore these. I believe it was the style right along with umbros.  Traditional pool party garb in the mid-nineties was colored umbro shorts with an over sized T-shirt (sleeves rolled up). The t-shirt was usually about 2 sizes too big and said things like “love you earth” or a hip hop cartoon Tee.  Gimme a holla if you remember this tragic fashion!

Ok sorry for the tangent!  Oh yeah back to my focus: The one piece.  So I haven’t worn one in quite awhile.  However I figured it would be a sexy yet conservative alternative to the bikini this summer.

So here’s a few of the options I am considering.  Help me pick what style I should try this summer!
